Mount.Fuji is a famous mountain in Japan. It's a famous physical characteristic, and it is so, because it's a landmark that identifies a place in that geographical location. Mt.Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, and as so, it's a major cultural significance to the Japanese. As we read below, being created by nature is one of the many characteristics of 'Place'. Mt.Fuji was created through nature's process, and because it's such a cultural importance to Japan, there are many folk lores about that place, which increase it's value to geography and this theme.

Place

'Place'  is a unique theme, which ironically can be defined by it's unique characteristics. 'Place' describes both human and physical characteristics.

Physical characteristics include specific (to that place) area's such as;

  • Mountains
  • Creaks
  • Rivers
  • Lakes

Human characteristics are shown in the theme 'Place' as;

  • Man-Made cultural features
  • Communication Networks
  • Transportation
  • Architecture
  • Peoples activity that changes or invents the way a place looks (summary)
As mentioned above, human characteristics include the man-made cultural features of a place, such as land use and architecture to variations of the way people live, religion, food, transportation, and communication networks (which are mentioned above).

Other examples of 'Place' include:
  • Vegetation
  • Climate
  • The Willamette Valley runs from Portland to Eugene.

The Sidney Opera House is a major landmark in the not just Australia, but in the world! This is an example of a human-characteristic because it was man-made. The opera house is home to many concerts, operas, and various activities. Ask an Australian if he/she has ever been in the Opera House, and they'd probably say 'yeah', because it's significant to the culture of Australia.
